The Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) was established in 1984 with the objective of guiding the planned growth and development of Dehradun and its surrounding regions. Situated in the fertile Doon Valley between the Yamuna and Ganga rivers, Dehradun is one of the most prominent cities in the Shivalik foothills and serves as a gateway to the hill districts of Uttarakhand. As urbanization accelerated, the need for a dedicated authority to regulate development and preserve the region’s natural beauty became increasingly important. MDDA was formed under the provisions of the U.P. Urban Planning and Development Act, 1973, to address these challenges and promote organized urban expansion.
As a self-sufficient local planning and decision-making body, MDDA is responsible for overseeing various aspects of urban development, including infrastructure, housing, land use planning, and environmental conservation. The authority works to prevent unplanned growth while ensuring that development remains sustainable, functional, and visually appealing. With the growing demands of the Dehradun-Mussoorie region, MDDA continues to play a vital role in creating a balanced urban environment that supports economic progress, public convenience, recreational needs, and ecological well-being.
