Rashtrapati Bhavan: The President's House & Lesser Known Facts Related To It
In 1912, the construction of the iconic Rashtrapati Bhavan began under the supervision of Lutyens and Herbert.
Originally, it was constructed as the resident of the then Viceroy who was ruling India.
The project, estimated to be completed within four years but took 17 years to be completed because the work had been stopped because of the First World war 1914-18.
In general, more than 23,000 labours were engaged in building this project, with an estimated cost of 14 million Indian rupees.
The Indian government took ownership of this project after Dr Rajendra Prasad occupied it and renamed it Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Rashtrapati Bhavan comprises 340 rooms equally spread over the four floors and span more than 200.000 square feet.
The Rashtrapati Bhavan carries a 100-armed Lord Buddha statue known as Sahastrabahu Avalokiteshvara. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan gifted this beautiful statue to the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
