Two housing complexes for slum dwellers are near completion by February 2024, bringing positive change and brighter futures to Kochi.

In a development for West Kochi, two housing complexes designed to uplift the lives of slum dwellers are set to be completed by February 2024. During a recent project review meeting in Kochi, K J Maxi, MLA, emphasized the importance of timely completion, urging officials to ensure the complexes are ready as scheduled.

The first complex in Thuruthy is a joint effort between the Kochi Corporation and the Cochin Smart Mission Ltd (CSML). Financial backing from Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) amounting to Rs. 18 crore, combined with Rs. 21 crore allocated by CSML, is steering the construction. The ground-plus-11-floor apartment complex will feature 199 units, each with a spacious 300 sq. ft. area.

Moving to the second complex in Mattancherry, is a tower rising up to the ground plus 13 floors, funded by CSML with a budget of Rs. 44 crore. Each floor, except the ground floor, will house 15 units spanning 328 sq. ft. However, the project faced delays due to approval hurdles from the Kerala Coastal Zone Management Authority (KCZMA). Despite a plea for a deadline extension to March 2024, the review meeting stood firm on the February 2024 completion date.

The journey of the RAY-backed housing complex has seen its share of challenges, with a decade-long lag in progress. A setback during the 2017-18 period halted the project, but it regained momentum with increased financial support from CSML.
