Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday announced plans for a world-class Central Park spanning nearly 295 acres, created by integrating the open land of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse with the Mumbai Coastal corridor.
Addressing the media, Shinde said the proposed Central Park will remain a completely green zone, with no surface-level construction except for walking paths. Speaking about the project, he said the park will remain entirely green, with no surface construction except for walking tracks. Visitors will be able to enjoy views of live horse racing while strolling through the park, creating a unique public experience rarely seen in major global cities.
A standout feature of the project is a 10 lakh square foot underground, eco-friendly sports complex beneath the park. The facility will house international-level sports infrastructure while also promoting indigenous Indian sports such as Kho-Kho and Kabaddi. For smooth traffic flow and crowd management, the Central Park will be directly connected to the Mumbai Coastal Road through a 1,200-meter-long underground tunnel. A tender worth ₹550 crore has been issued for this connectivity. The underground access to the park and sports complex minimizes surface congestion.
Parking facilities along the Coastal Road will accommodate 1,200 cars and 100 buses, further easing congestion in the area. The entire project has been designed by noted architect Hafeez Contractor. During the briefing, Shinde also provided updates on other civic infrastructure projects, stating that all road concretization work across Mumbai will be completed by May. Additionally, sewage treatment projects are scheduled for completion by December 6, 2026.
He also said the initiative will effectively create a 300-acre oxygen park, playing a significant role in reducing air pollution in Mumbai and improving the city’s environmental health. Providing updates on other infrastructure works, the deputy CM said that all road concretization projects in Mumbai will be completed by May, while sewage treatment projects are scheduled to be finished by December 6, 2026.
The announcement is being seen as a major moment for Mumbai, as it combines large-scale green space creation, world-class sports infrastructure, and traffic clearance. If executed as planned, the Central Park could redefine public life in Mumbai, offering residents a rare balance of greenery, sports, leisure, and mobility infrastructure.
